On Our Radar

Savv is a singer-songwriter raised in the city of Brampton.

Being in the shadow of Toronto, Savv has crafted his sound around the dark undertones of the city and his life. He has become a staple figure in his city whilst overcoming his personal struggles with depression. His versatility is represented through his unique sound which incorporates new age melodies combined with visceral lyricism and distinct instrumentation. Throughout his career, Savv has created a myriad of sounds showing his capability to effectively perform over any genre. His EP winter released on January 29th 2018 features talented local producers such as K-Beatz, Laffey, & Muddy. Shrouded in mystery, his music gives us an interesting glimpse into the soul of Savv

Savv evokes the feelings of Toronto’s winter season in his ethereally-produced and introspectively written EP. The simple elegance in the sound of the album is met with Savv’s thematically dark undertones, a signature he has established for himself.

Click play below, and scroll through the comprehensive breakdown that Savv put together himself for most of these tunes:

“winter.” begins with the title track, portraying a confident Savv that embraces his shortcomings, and progresses into sorrow; backtracking into old habits. It’s the story of an individual who is at the brink of moving on, but gets pulled back both literally and metaphorically (back with an ex/back into the cycle of depression). It is the embodiment of “five steps forward and ten steps back” put into a musical context. In the midst of a culture that insists on pushing a narrative of forced positivity, “winter.” demonstrates that, at the blink of an eye, the good times can fall apart at the seams.

"out the city"
This bouncy trap-inspired banger gets you moving while Savv lyrically pours out his heart. Savv’s melodic talents are complemented with elegant production from K-beatz and juxtaposed with the outro song “pinksky.”; a ballad demonstrating Savv’s unique, yet infectious crooning style. In “out the city.”, Savv raps about leaving the busy downtown lifestyle to escape his inner demons, locking himself up in his house – ‘sleeping on the couch at my crib for like months’ – working tirelessly on music. The second half of the track, “pinksky.”, is a turning point on the album. ‘Why don’t you ever tell me that you love me?’, Savv sings with appalling honesty. This dismal love song exposes Savv’s deepest insecurities. Through modulated vocalization, Savv conveys a distorted sense of his reality.

"winter." Blurb:
This lively album opener is a glimpse into Savv’s life. The song recaps what happened to Savv after the release of his first EP “blue.”. This is his humble ‘brag’ song. It addresses some of the most negative aspects of Savv’s life with unflinching confidence. In the midst of a cold winter, Savv finds a way to thrive. He reminds his detractors that regardless of his flaws and insecurities, he cannot be defeated. This newfound braggadocio is met with Savv’s familiar realism; he’s not afraid to admit that he’s still in debt. This song is a testament to overcoming one’s negative circumstances by fully embracing them.

"angel." Blurb:

Savv describes “angel.” as the most aggressively honest song of the album. Both Savv and Muddy sing about their troubles with women who have hurt them in the past. Muddy is a mysterious figure out of Brampton who although has a small discography, makes a captivating impact on Savv’s album with his feature on this song; the sole feature in Savv’s entire discography. The chorus, “you’re the devil I can’t dance with you, baby” is contrasted with the title of the song, demonstrating that the devil was once an angel that has fallen. These women that once brought them profound happiness have also inflicted lasting sorrow. “angel.” signals the middle of the album which represents a change in the mood from confidence to agony, illustrating Savv submitting to the beguiling temptations of life, spiraling into a darker hole of familiar loneliness.
