The Bunz Behind It All : An Interview With Rebecca Hearn
We had the pleasure of spending a sunny afternoon rolling in the grass with Becky Hearn, a Montreal native turned West Coast creative who goes by the Instagram alias Becky Bunz. She spoke to us during one of her visits home about her new life in California and how she plans to ride the big wave.
Hearn is a self-proclaimed lifestyle model, stylist and all around creative who is represented by 7 Artists Management, an "agency that represents photographers, stylists, anyone working as a creative." Although she's the first to admit that LA "obviously has a lot of superficiality," Hearn describes herself as someone who's stayed true to herself despite her environment; "I still play rugby and tutor homeless youth, I'm doing things I'd be doing here in Montreal."
When we asked her what she would describe as 'living the dream', we didn't get the answer that one would expect from someone who made the move to California, that is the quest for fame and fortune. Instead, she answered that her immediate goals may "sound cheesy", but she just wants to stay true to herself and be really happy. "Living in LA means being constantly surrounded by ambitious people with great ideas," which she admits is inherently motivating, but her ultimate goal is more simple; "to just do more creative work," always with an emphasis on complete and utter happiness every step of the way, no matter where that brings her.
Hanging out with Hearn for only a few hours showed us that she completely embodies this lifestyle already; every minute is a hilariously good time, and all you have to do is point and shoot for magic to happen. She dances around the grass radiating positivity and working with everything you give her, even if the jeans you've stitched are 3 sizes too big.
Her average day starts off in a typically West Coast fashion, that is by hitting the gym and eating healthy. She then helps with apparel manufacturing at her husband Kurt's street wear brand Noons Goons and works on her widely read blog. If the waves are good she'll go surfing, and she makes sure to get some reading in every night before bed. Her favourite photographers in the Golden State are Ted Emmons and Jason Lee Perry, and special days dubbed 'San O'Sundays' are spent gathering with friends at San Onofre State Beach, where they drive dune buggies, surf all day and drink some beers. "It's a long continuous wave," she said, "and you never get tired of it."
There's something totally unabashed about Hearn, as if she has nothing to hide, and even if she did she wouldn't give a shit if you found out anyway. Her guilty pleasure is Forever 21 where she'll happily admit she "finds some crazy cool things", and although she loves Montreal, she didn't hesitate to state that she'll "never come back to live but always to visit." As far as travelling goes, she plans on hitting South East Asia, specifically Bali, and she would love to eventually surf and camp in Indonesia. "I also really want to go to France to perfect my french," she added, "the world is my oyster!"
