if You're Looking For a New Hair Style, Refer To Your iTunes
Looking at today's state of rap and r&b is almost like looking at pictures of distant family from my country, I'm Jamaican by the way. For some reason dreadlocks seems to be the new trend among a lot of artists, well because of how awesome they are of course. Similar to 80's hair metal bands this trend seems to be rap and r&b's 2014 version since so many artists have switched their hairstyle or have had it for a good chunk of their career which we kind of will always refer to them as. Kind of like 10 years from now we'll be saying "hey you remember that guy from Cash Money with dreads?" "you mean Lil Wayne?". I mean, I can't blame em, I myself even switched up from the afro to this simply based on boredom because who wants to get a haircut all the damn time right?
Exhibit A: The Twists Stage
This beginning stage of locking your hair is used as a stepping stone for your hair to grow longer. You might notice rappers like Travis Scott utilize this style before his hair grew into the long shoelace braids you might see today. Some artists tend to change their hair into this style with the intention of growing locks from what it looks like; however, some just look for a new intricate hair style to change their image.
Also, who else than non-other "King" Kendrick Lamar twist his hair into this style as well as seen recently in his "I" video.
Exhibit B: The Generic Locks
First we have artists like The Beatl....I mean Migos where 2/3 of the trio had grown locks, Offset is just a little late on the memo.
Followed by Partynextdoor with the skinny yet simplistic dreads.
Exhibit C: Abstract/Free-form
This style is usually adapted by the most mysterious artists in this new age of music and sometimes the artsy, seeing that the hair style looks similar to the late Basquiat.
Take The Weeknd for example- the drug fuelled vocalist from Scarborough seems to reveal little about what he does in his spare time but rest assured ecstasy and angelic white women are involved among other things. Jaden Smith also fits this description since it's evident his mind is a complete enigma and one very weird individual. If you haven't read his social media, Jaden is quite the philosopher despite his weirdness.
Exhibit D: Colour Dye
People always say that dyeing your hair a certain colour defines your current emotional state or going through a harsh time in your life. We heard him loud and clear once Wiz Khalifa dyed his locks purple once him and Amber split.
Most artists tend to dye their hair a certain colour to make things interesting or spark a media frenzy. Blonde is usually the more generic way of attracting attention like for example- Future dyeing his locks blonde along with Ciara getting as well as Young Thug doing the same in September.
If you already started searching the internet for beeswax I don't blame you. Dreadlocks are a pretty fun way of switching up your hairstyle and can usually be prolonged. On the plus side, who wouldn't want to shake around their hair to some head banging music at a concert.
