An Interview with Makeup Artist Kelseyanna Fitzpatrick

On Our Radar

We spoke to Vancouver based makeup artist Kelseyanna Fitzpatrick on how painting inspired her life and career.

TT: What’s your favourite thing about living in Vancouver?

KF: The people I love.

TT: How did you discover your passion for makeup?

KF: Art has always been everything to me. It's pretty much all I'm good at. I took intense art classes all through school, painting was always my favourite. I just decided to paint on humans instead. I discovered how much I loved it when I was 15 or 16. I agreed to do 19th century clown makeup on a cast of 100+ for my school play so that I didn't have to perform. It was awesome.

TT: What has been your all-time best shoot to date?

KF: That's pretty hard to say, I think my best work is yet to come. But my favourite was my first shoot with Pier-Alexandre Gagné and model Jen. Pure raw art, disturbing but beautiful. It happened so naturally it felt amazing.

TT: What’s the best thing about being a makeup artist?

KF:  I get to paint everyday. That's all I do. I watch amazing people do what they do best. Humans are fascinating and powerful canvases.

TT: What’s another artistic medium you would like to explore?

KF: I want to get back into textural painting and life drawing.

TT: Where do you look for inspiration?

KF: Everywhere. I'm constantly stopping to take photos of random things that inspire me, it's a little crazy. Mostly naturally occurring textures and colour schemes. I have huge archives of makeup/paintings/sculptures/dolls by artists that inspire me. I try to get inspired by things that have nothing to do with makeup though, to get original ideas.

TT: Which four words describe you best?

KF: It's complicated.

TT: What’s the next goal on your “list”?

KF: I would really like to do fashion week internationally.
