In The Ear of Matt FX: The Music Supervisor of Broad City

IXclusive Interviews

Admit it. You don't really think twice, or more like three times about the musical choices made while watching your favourite TV shows. Okay, maybe you do make the comment, and maybe you do Shazam the track, but do you actually take the time to find out who made the choices behind these songs playing throughout the episode?

Season 3 of Comedy Central's Broad City recently kicked off and we got the chance to touch base with the show's [youngest] music supervisor Matt FX. Arguably the youngest person in his position at only 24-years-old, Matt was also a music supervisor for MTV's Skins, and also for Amy Poehler's new Hulu series Difficult People.

Not only is he a musical genius, he has the power to help us all discover [now superstar] acts Phantogram and Blood Orange. He's obviously got the coolest job possible, and he's most impressive to say the least. This multi-faceted talented individual also dabbles in many interesting projects. Did we mention he's also a food connoisseur

Amongst his many endeavours, Matt FX is also part of Scooter Island, an NYC-based 20 person collective that is behind the "Rooftop Music" movement, which is really a crossover between urban and tropical style music.

Instead of a boring ol' interview, we decided to ask Matt FX to describe a typical day of his activities through musical choices. He's collected a good bunch of tracks and describes the typical activity that goes with it. Scroll through his picks below:

IN THE EAR OF MATT FX:

I don't know what it is about this song, but I've maybe listened to it more than any other song in the past year (and it's only been out a couple weeks.) Especially when I wake up, and I'm still in bed.. take out my phone, turn on that sonos. Beautiful morning.

Also, because this song is still really that new, it seems like Tidal is the only place you can *legally* listen to it on the internet. For that reason, I've instead included the cutest child ever conducting the song's entrance in my favorite meme of the year so far!

EMAILS | Henrik The Artist - Naked

Every good freelancer / hustler starts their day off answering a slew of emails, and I am no different. I love this tune for it's fast pace, but also because the drops aren't nearly as distracting as one might expect from the track's epic builds. The sustain / release is perfectly suited for pounding out a bunch of messages, and besides, I'm normally still naked myself whilst doing this.

BREAKFAST | Smino - Kreme Brulee

"I need you in my coffee when I wake up, no creme." enough said. Mark my words - Smino is going to take over the world.

WORK | Rihanna - Work (Vandalized Cover)

At this point in my day, regardless of whether I'm leaving the house to work on music supervision or staying home and waiting for an artist I'm working with to come through for a session, it's all about getting to work work work work work work. Amsterdam's Jarreau Vandal is another artist who I'm happy to predict an incredible successful future, and his cover (note: he rerecorded vocals even!) is a great example of the boundary-pushing direction he's moving in.

LUNCH | Tony Quattro - My House

Let's assume for the purposes of this playlist that I'm indeed spending the day at home. I have been known in my day to flex on a taco or two, especially at my house, in my own kitchen. It's my house, new york.

(Also - fun fact - my boy Tony Quattro produced this with vocals he recorded from a homeless subway performer, Showtime Willy!)

4:20 | P. Morris - Work

I've talked about this song on a few other occasions but judging on it's soundcloud plays I suppose I still haven't talked about it enough. Goomba lord P. Morris produced a small masterpiece last year w/ his Daydream EP and this tune in particular is probably my favorite track to get blazed to at the moment! Take a listen and you'll see - this is a very different work than Rihanna's.

SHOWER | Voom Voom - Best Friend

I was at home all day, okay! I haven't showered yet! sorry!!! TBH I don't even remember how I discovered this tune though I will say it is my ultimate shower jam. There is no better feeling than grooving in the shower whilst getting ready to get flossy for the night and this nice and long 7 minute jam is a perfect accompaniment!

WOO | The Milk - Deliver Me (Baby Prince Edit)

And now we're getting to that point in the evening where the sun's down, the lights in my living room are low, and the drink has been poured. We can even assume a female friend might be coming over to hang for a bit; this is most definitely the vibe playing when she'd walk through the door.

LATE | P SOL - Don't Stop

A gentleman doesn't kiss and tell, so without revealing whether we might have stayed in or gone out to party somewhere (because realistically at this point I should probably leave my house anyway) the track playing would definitely be P SOL's 'Don't Stop'. Funnily enough, if I did go out at that point it'd probably be to Brooklyn and this track is actually from the artist's 'Brooklyn NYC Edits' EP that is unfortunately not available anywhere other than the for-DJs by-DJs web store Juno Download :(. That said, you can hear a snippet of the track on the EP sampler available on Soundcloud starting just before the 6 minute mark!

I would have picked the EP sampler's opener, 'Take It Off', but I thought that might be just a bit tooooo cheeky. The whole EP is straight fire, though.
