In case you missed out the first time around, you can read our IXclusive interview with VILIFY right here:

IX: When did you start spinning/producing music?

I have been DJing for over 10 years now. It felt as though production often got pushed to the back-burner with such a busy DJ schedule, but this year production just took over. I kept saying, ‘it all just clicked’ but I really think it was just years (and years) of work that finally paid off.

IX: Did you have any musical background before getting into the DJ scene?

I have been surrounded by all kinds of music my whole life. My dad sings opera and my mom plays the violin. I dabbled in a few instruments while growing up (piano, alto saxophone) and was in the Toronto Children’s Opera Chorus when I was younger. Singing has stuck with me (my vocals are on on my track ‘Bring Me Down’ in this mix) and I look forward to continue to combining my vocals with production in the future.

IX: What artists have had an influence on what you do?

It’s hard to know where to start. Jungle and DNB had the biggest effect on me growing up. The scene in Toronto was bursting with talent, passion and great parties. Marcus Visionary, Gremlinz, Capital J, Mystical Influence, etc etc.. It was a great time and place to be growing up with a fake ID and good friends. But I also take inspiration from jazz (Armstrong, Coltrane, Ellington), metal / alternative (Manson, Rage Against The Machine), Breakcore (Venetian Snares, Bong-ra, Enduser) .. I could go on forever.. I guess this shows itself in the wide variety of genres I play and sounds in my production.

IX: What is one of your most memorable moments in your career up to now?

I think running into the ocean mid-set in Martinique (Martizique Festival) will forever stay in my mind. But the Bass Drive Anniversaries have always been so insane, emotional, and fulfilling.. I’m not sure if I’ve ever had a feeling quite like that.

IX: What is the big plan for the next year?

Some big big news for this summer.. That you’ll have to wait and see. But I will continue releasing my music (there are 14 original tunes in this mix, only 2 of which have been made public so far). So ya, just to keep the music coming and coming out, some big festivals lined up, collaborations.. It will be a big year for sure.
