NO KANDI ALLOWED: Diplo's Kandi Ban Alienates Fans in the Name of Safety
Diplo & Co's recent ban of Kandi at their festival events, Mad Decent Block Party, is still causing waves within the EDM community. Earlier this month, the Mad Decent head honcho followed in the footsteps of HARDFEST founder Gary Richards (AKA Destructo) in banning the colourful plastic beads from his events. While many consider Kandi to be a playful symbol for freedom of expression with a long history in EDM culture, Diplo claims that the ban exists to protect festival attendees.
This week, Diplo was forced to put his new policy into action as he was filmed being offered Kandi by an event attendee. His response? "I'm not good at PLUR."
The recent controversy surrounding Kandi raises some serious questions about how Kandi and PLUR culture is viewed by festival organizers. Although Mad Decent Block Party saw a decrease in injuries and deaths following the new restrictions, one has to wonder if an entire subculture is being punished for the mistakes of the few.
This controversy comes at a time when EDM fans are being alienated on the regular. Just this past weekend, over 47 people were arrested at Montreal's Île Soniq festival on drug-related charges.
