What happens when you take an explosive Recording Artist from Toronto, a Photographer with an eye to kill, and a creative team that can take your vision and amplify it x10?

THIS SHOOT.

Who's got the sauce? This girl's got the sauce. Toronto-based emerging artist Nicxtina is a girl to keep your eye on. We had the chance to collaborate with a few of Toronto's finest on an exclusive feature with this up-and-coming lil' shorty. It began with high-end street wear brand PARLOQUE crafting together a spread of looks inspired by qualities of Nicxtina's character. We sat down to dissect each look in detail. Check out her insight below.

Look #1: MATANGI

Think Jungle Fever, where Vogue Italia meets M.I.A.

Nicxtina: M.I.A. is an idol to me, as far as being a strong unapologetic female in the industry goes. She is by far my biggest inspiration for style, and in this she is unapologetic as well; clashing patterns and colors and textures in unsafe ways, creating a discordant look one might compare to collage. She is one of few female rappers whose agenda does not revolve around how she is perceived (as a “hard” rapper for example), but rather focuses on enlightening her listeners with her observations... with [her] style. Never over-sexualized or compromising, she always puts the art and its integrity first.

Look #2 : GODDESS OF THE DEAD SEA/ DROPS OF JUPITER

Pisces bb 4 evr

Nicxtina: I’m kind of a Pisces freak. I rap about associated characteristics and the imagery that surrounds them a lot. I can really identify with being an overly emotional wreck, a dreamer, a fish going with the flow, someone who's open to anything with a penchant for self-destruction. I’ve always been really great at holding my breath and I remember as a kid, diving to the bottom of pools flapping my feet like they were fins, brushing my long hair “under the sea” like Ariel did in The Little Mermaid.

Nicxtina: Fun fact! I actually ended up with the name Nicxtina after Andre Nickatina once rapped, “My favorite color blue, I like the number two, meaning that I like to have my cake and eat it too.” I’m born on the 2nd of March, my favorite color is also blue, and I’ll take cake if you got it. *laughs*

Look #3: TALAAH

She loves goooold

Nicxtina: My mom was the fashionista of the family, definitely not pops, but the one thing he could never mess up was gold. He would go to Iran and bring back a golden treat for me every time. I swear, I had the Sex in the City “Carrie” necklace before it was cool. Only, I have one in English and in Farsi. Talaah til' I die.

Nicxtina: I have a hard time defining my style to people, mostly because dressing up is exactly that to me - dress-up! I like to feel like I get to choose a new costume (rather than outfit) everyday- I want to adapt, morph, experiment. I wanna feel myself on every level.

Look #4: SUGAR, SUGAR

A dichotomy of persona #PopPrincess

Nicxtina: In this photo, I wanted to replicate the tone and the themes in my latest music video, "UDKM" (U Don't Know Me). It’s a cotton candy carnival, bouncy and bubbly, but on the flip side its black on black balloons of emptiness you just can’t shake. With "UDKM", the baby hues, pastels, and colorful patterns within the styling were an explicit contrast to the bare, unpolished surrounding of a trailer park on the outskirts of a wealthy city.

Look #5: BAD BITCH BETTY

Been makin' lattice crust for years...

Nicxtina: I'm secretly domesticated. I love being in the kitchen as much as I love taking pics and getting dressed up. I love feeding people, in whatever capacity... I can dish it out. This look represents my personality, it's a take on indulgence and playfulness. It's about having fun and not always following the rules. Let's call it yolo.

Look #6:  BUS STOP BUSTED

A homage to Courtney Love

Nicxtina: I spent half my life waiting for transit and the other half getting places. I’m okay with transit, because i’m most inspired to write raps while taking in the passing city through a streetcar window. Courtney Love was a big thing for me and so was Nirvana. Kurt Cobain was a Pisces and he's pretty much my spirit animal. He would thrash and go insane on stage, he had such a life to him. He’s so human.

Nicxtina: Overall, I'm inspired by bad ass females that have impacted the music industry, those who are not afraid to express themselves and create a new lane. I look up to women that embrace themselves for their unique offerings. I'll stay forever young. I’m also inspired by youth, nostalgia and all things from simpler times. I could eat bubble gum ice cream and monkey bar through the rest of my life (stoned, obviously). Keep it true to the grit.

You can check out Nicxtina's first music video "UDKM" featuring Raw J below.

Nicxtina: I think when it comes to the world of female MC’s, unfortunately, we feel obligated to fall into one of two categories. Either we rough it up and exaggerate aggression to compensate for our lack of a penis OR we get flouncy and hyper-sexualize ourselves to further highlight our lack of a penis. This isn’t everyone, of course, but it is disappointing that we’re trying to force ourselves into these narrow classifications when our individuality and unique interpretations are what make us special in the first place.
