When Style Meets Sound: 4 Brands with Music You Should Listen To
Style and sound are commonly linked - stores play music to enhance the experience, fashion empires often hire some of the world-renowned DJs to play their runways, music, in turn, can spawn iconic fashion trends (harem pants, anyone?). A perfect blend of modern style and music? Siblings Dave 1 of Chromeo and A-trak. Not sacrificing one for the other, this brotherly pair manages to look the part of world-class travelers while turning out quality tracks. The following four brands have continued in that philosphy by expanding their lifestyle ideologies through to Soundcloud and managed to provide some solid mixes to accompany what they call style.
SSENSE – Montreal, QC, Canada
This store is for the elite. When you got stylists in your store workin’ for Kanye, Jay-Z, and Beyonce, you gotta have the music and atmosphere to match. In two years, their collection has expanded to include artists from Keep Shelly in Athens to How to Dress Well to Sango and Samo Sound Boy.
STUSSY – Laguna Beach, California, US
A brand that was once known for their surfwear, since expanding into baggy sweaters and low-hanging tanks, they’ve developed into a hip-hop staple. Hence, a collaboration with LA-based record label Soulection is only natural.
Aritzia – Vancouver, BC, Canada
Sophisticated, laidback, stylish – Aritzia’s business casual, vacation-ready, year-round style is only matched by their Soundcloud presence where you’ll find a mix of RnB, Hip-Hop, Funk tracks reflective of Vancouver’s west coast vibes.
Karmaloop – Boston, Massachusetts, US
Another store not unlike SSENSE and a style not unlike that of STUSSY, this online retailer has taken to Soundcloud to further promote the Hip-Hop lifestyle. As to why they stopped after two mixes remains a mystery but here’s hope they’ll continue the series with some top notch DJs.
