Die Antwoord To Star as Themselves in Science Fiction Movie "Chappie"
If there’s one thing South African bad ass rap group Die Antwoord knows how to do, it’s to be as absolutely fucking amazingly weird as possible and make music you can’t help but try to decipher the lyrics to.
So when I heard the band was appearing in their first motion picture AS THEMSELVES, I knew I had to investigate just what the hell was going on.
“Die Antwoord in some ways defies definition and explanation” says producer of the movie Simon Kinberg and there’s no point in arguing the man's reason. The duo that is Yolandi Visser and Ninja, came on the scene in 2008 and has been nothing but question marks and parodies on pop culture ever since. Their friend, producer and label co-owner DJ Hi-Tek completes the group although doesn’t appear in their videos or photo shoots as to remain mysterious or something of the like.
The movie tells the tale of Chappie , voiced by District 9 star Sharlto Copley, the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. Chappie is raised by Die Antwoord, helps them fight off their enemies and learns lessons on life. Now I can only assume the logical explanation for such a plot is that director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) was very obviously eating shrooms while watching I, Robot one night. (Disclaimer: no research was done to provide confirmation on the aforementioned claims so do not take my word for it or else I’m screwed) But hey, more power to him because I cannot wait to see this movie! Rounding out the cast are the likes of Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and Slumdog Millionaire (is it not hip to mention this movie anymore? Like is everyone over it? Idk I think its still fucking amazing so wtv) Dev Patel.
The band’s “zef” movement, which is more of a lifestyle for the group, can be summarized as the desire to dress and live as freely as possible while basically not giving a fuck. With the restraints on individualism only getting tighter and tighter in modern society, more people are turning towards a free-forward way of thinking and embracing their “weird”. Because I hate to burst your bubble (ok not really, I actually love it) but there’s no such thing as “normal” you guys, so get with the program and let your freak flag fly.
Will you be watching Chappie come March 4th?
