Stoya Accuses Porn-Star James Deen of Rape: Two Others Accuse Him of Sexual Assault

Porn star and writer Stoya has publicly accused James Deen of raping her. Deen is also a famous porn star and Stoya's ex-boyfriend. Stoya made her statement on Twitter, adding that Deen being touted as a feminist only made it worse:

Deen has responded in the typical fashion of a celebrity being accused of sexual assault. He focuses on defending his character and circles around the actual accusation. This technique has worked for many celebrities in the past. MMA fighter War Machine denied sexually and physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend Christy Mack by saying he was just visiting her to propose. War Machine wanted you to know he’s a romantic. Bill Cosby is quite obviously a serial date-rapist and has been accused of sexual assault by more than 50 women, but likes to remind you he’s your friend.

And now there’s Deen, asserting that he respects women, reaching for that support from his feminist followers.

Romantics can’t hurt you. Friends can’t drug you. Feminists can’t rape you. These are the things they want you to believe.

After Stoya’s tweets, other adult film actresses came forward to reveal Deen sexually assaulting them. Tori Lux described a scenario where Deen antagonized, attacked and demeaned her after finishing a scene:

“I hadn’t even had time to dress myself when he said, with a smirk on his face, 'Tori Lux, would you like to sniff my testicles?' 'Nope,' I replied in a neutral tone. 'I’ll repeat myself: Tori Lux, would you like to sniff my testicles?' he asked, more aggressively this time. I replied with a firm 'No,' in order to establish my boundary—which James then disregarded by grabbing me by the throat and shoving me down onto a mattress on the floor.
He proceeded to straddle my chest, pinning down my arms with his knees. Then, he raised his hand high above his head, swinging it down and hitting me in the face and head with an open palm. He did this five or six times—hard—before finally getting off of me.
Disoriented and nursing a sore jaw, I stood up—but before I could collect myself, he grabbed me by my hair and shoved me to my knees, forcing my face into his crotch several times before shoving me to the floor.”

Adult film actress Ashley Fires also recounted her story to The Daily Beast, where she described Deen trying to force himself on her: “... I was getting out of the shower of the communal bathroom at Kink, I reach for my towel to dry off, and he comes up from behind me and pushes himself and his erection into my butt,” she continued. “He pushes me against the sink and starts grabbing on me and I was like, ‘No, no, no James, no,’ and he released me from his grasp, and says, ‘You know, later if you want to fuck around I’m in room whatever-it-was. I was like, ‘Fuck you.’ I didn’t even know this guy, he was so out of line and entitled with my body.”

James Deen

Consequences have already been happening for Deen. The Frisky swiftly ended Deen’s sex advice column for them and posted an amazing article written by Amelia McDonell-Parry about the decision. Kink, the same porn company mentioned in Ashley Fires’ accusation, has recently severed ties with Deen. The porn company Evil Angels told Buzzfeed News that they would suspend their relationship with Deen and refuse to release any new scenes with him. On Monday, Deen resigned as the chairperson of the board of directors for APAC (Adult Performer Advocacy Committee). It looks promising that these consequences are happening so quickly after the accusation, but I’m not entirely hopeful. These reactions from porn companies seem more like damage control than concern. Porn is a very lucrative business, after all.

These accusations are especially difficult because they involve members of the porn industry, which always muddies the conversation about sexual assault.
A lot of people have difficulty believing sex workers can be sexually assaulted. Whether its prostitutes, strippers, or porn stars, their jobs are supposedly the epitome of “asking for it”. Rapists, abusers, and defense attorneys use this popular belief to their advantage. There’s the case of Daniel Holtzclaw, a cop who used his power to sexually assault 13 black women. Holtzclaw specifically targeted sex workers and women with previous drug charges, because it would damage their credibility and diminish the likelihood that they’d try to press charges. And remember when I mentioned War Machine? His defense in court for brutally assaulting his ex-girlfriend Christy Mack is that he couldn’t possibly rape her, because she was an adult film star and she likes rough sex.

Christy Mack Assault

We don’t have to fall for these assumptions. Porn stars can be raped, even if they do videos of hardcore BDSM or rape-fantasies. I stand with Stoya. I stand with Tori Lux. I stand with Ashley Fires. And I hope that James Deen suffers the consequences.

Update: James Deen has a fourth accuser, one who wishes to remain anonymous, who says he raped her at a party in Las Vegas in 2009. She was friends with his girlfriend at-the-time, adult film star Joanna Angel.
