Tits Or GTFO; Why The Internet Wants Naked Starlets

Just some of the celebrities whose iCloud accounts were hacked.

If you haven't had access to the internet for the last couple of weeks, or happen to be a recluse hiding in a cabin deep in the woods, then you may not be aware that recently there was a mass online leak of naked celebrity photos.

Stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Kirsten Dunst and Kaley Cuoco are among a long list of celebrities whose iCloud accounts were hacked. Explicit photos, videos, contact information, even their private texts are among some of the private and personal content that was stolen from their accounts. Photos of the nude celebrities were uploaded to 4chan, a photo sharing site, with the alleged hacker posting a list of all the celebrities whose privacy he’d violated.

"The Fappening" is not something to laugh at.

Web dwellers have named the event “the fappening” (for its supposed masturbatory content), and claiming that these women were “asking for it” by allowing naked photos of them to be taken in the first place. Despite this being both a serious violation of what little privacy these celebrities had to begin with, as well as a heinous sex crime, it’s given us all a first class ticket to see rape culture up close and personal in today’s society.

The list, which can be found here on The LADbible, features exclusively female celebrities. Despite Justin Verlander allegedly appearing with Upton in several of the photos, and claims that there’s a film with Dave Franco and Alison Brie, the men in the content are nothing but scenery while the women serve as the focus of this poorly named “scandal” (the Globe and Mail does a great job of explaining why calling this a scandal is both inaccurate and wildly insensitive).

A rape joke is never something to laugh at

Why? Because it’s only entertaining when women are victims. We live in a culture that celebrates rape jokes, believes a woman has to be on her period to be upset, and thinks the glass ceiling is either an antiquated term or a design choice. We've been so conditioned to subjugate women that there’s even a Tumblr dedicated to women who believe that they don’t need feminism. Calling yourself a feminist is like calling yourself a leper; no one wants to be around you in case they catch what you have. Women have been raised to be afraid, repulsed, or ashamed of their bodies, yet flaunt them for men to admire. But be careful not to flaunt it too much, or else you’ll be slut shamed and deemed a social pariah.

This isn't a joke.

Men, on the other hand, have been taught to feel strong and confident in their own skin (which isn't to say that men don’t suffer from a host of body image related conditions, including bulimia or body dysmorphic disorder). They’re encouraged to brag about their sexual “conquests,” that men should be sexually voracious and sow their wild oats while they can. We’re in a society that’s encouraged the mentality of “he who holds the penis holds the power.”

This might seem extreme, even ridiculous, but think about it.

Dick pics have existed since the dawn of the camera phone. Everyday women, and underage high school girls, are unwillingly assaulted with pictures of male genitalia. These photos are often treated like a joke, without people giving them much thought. However these pictures can pressure young women into taking naked photos of themselves because they've been taught they need to reciprocate, even if the pictures sent were unsolicited. It’s become such a problem, especially for girls, that the RCMP have even released an app to help girls deal with answering them.

Revenge porn ruins lives.

Unlike the dick pics, though, these photos can ruin a woman’s reputation and life. They aren't a laughing matter, they aren't a joke, and they’re not something fast forgotten. Women can lose their job over them, lose their friends, become a social outcast, and even face rejection from their family. These pictures, which were for private use, can be published to public forums for the world to see. They’re used to control, manipulate, and blackmail women.

The reason Redditors, 4chan users, 9gagers, and anyone else who’s been involved showing these intimate photos of female celebrities, continue to spread the images around are because they’re powerless. These people who victimize female celebrities by shaming them for their private photos are just looking for a way to dominate powerful women.

J Law flipping people off.

Jennifer Lawrence, for instance, is an incredible woman. Funny, smart and talented, she has it all. She’s a Hollywood powerhouse, Academy Award Winner, and a strong individual. So how can society knock her down a peg? By stealing her private naked pictures, exposing them to world, and then shaming her for taking them in the first place. What she does in the privacy of her own home is no one’s concern but hers, yet online audiences have been chastising her decision to allow herself to be photographed. The fact that people have been focusing on her nude photos, and not the fact that they've been stolen and illegally distributed, shows us an exceptionally problematic cultural thought process.

Audiences don’t care about naked men because they’re not the focus of cultural subjugation, women are. One is a joke, one is a victim, but neither one is funny. When it comes to our culture of rape tolerance and propagation, we don’t care about naked men.

It’s tits, or get the fuck out.
