We like to consider ourselves sartorially inspired. With a thriving style section and an in-house killer fashion duo The Trollsen Twins making waves - we are no stranger to supporting, deconstructing and embodying unique and inspired looks. In honour of the fashion world, we have decided to take a look at some of our favourite true stories of cinematic style - with ten documentaries that look at the good, the bad and the ugly of the fashion world.

Advanced Style - Lina Plioplyte

As much as clothing, youth is one of the biggest commodity in the world of fashion. That is why Advanced Style, inspired by a blog of the same name, is so refreshing. Focusing on older women, the documentary explores the idea that style has no age. Thanks to the notoriety of blogs and the rise of street fashion, the women who are subjects of the documentary see a later life renaissance as their unique sense of style affords them opportunities in the fashion world that would have been unthinkable in the pre-Internet world.

Bill Cunningham New York - Richard Press

A defining fixture in street fashion, Bill Cunningham and his bike have helped democratize fashion. His photography, focused in on stylish New Yorkers, helped focus the lens away from models and onto ordinary people. One of the most inspirational films about art and life, Cunningham’s devotion to his craft and passion for people is infectious. Whether or not you have a passion for fashion, Bill Cunningham New York is a must-watch for people who want to pursue their dreams against the odds.

Chasing Beauty - Brent Huff

A darker look at the glamorous lives of models, Chasing Beauty pulls back the curtain on the last effects of living your life in front of the camera. Measuring the cost of beauty, the film examines the sacrifices and pressures of being a model, as well as the less-often discussed moral costs. Featuring a wide range of interview subjects, including a number of plastic surgeons and psychologists this is a unique and harrowing look at the more sinister side of the unattainable ideals imposed on the modelling world.

Diana Vreeland: The Eye has to travel - Lisa Immordino Vreeland, Frédéric Tcheng & Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt

Before Anna Wintour, there was Diana Vreeland. In Diana Vreeland: The Eye has to Travel, the life of one of the most important artistic directors in the world of fashion is told in her own words - assembled from voice recordings used in her memoirs. With a hand in both Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, Vreeland helped to literally change the face of fashion in her casting choices and ultimately helped cement its status as an art form. Her wit was fearless, and she could bring down entire rooms with a carefully placed quip.

Dior and I - Frédéric Tcheng

With just 8 weeks to pull together a collection for Dior, Raf Simons has his work cut out for him. An unprecedented look behind the scenes from the inception of an idea to the runway premiere, Dior and I highlights the artistic and labour intensive process that goes into an haute couture show. The documentary very carefully paints a portrait of intense collaboration and incredible skill, as much of the focus is on the women artisans who help bring Simons’ vision to life.

Girl Model - Ashley Sabin &  David Redmon

A darker look at the fashion world, Girl Model discusses the hot-button issue of underage models coming from unprivileged backgrounds. While many countries and fashion houses claim to no longer employ under legal age girls, an entire industry is built around scouting for prospective talent -- and in markets like Japan, the hunger for youth is insatiable. Beautifully structured as a story where there are no winners, we follow two parallel stories - a former model turned fashion scout who talks about her emotional struggles in the industry, and a 13-year-old Russian model who is shipped to Japan alone. A harrowing look at the dark side of the fashion industry, Girl Model is essential viewing.

Iris - Albert Maysles

A fixture of street fashion in New York, Iris Apfel is the subject of Albert Maysles’ (Gimme Shelter, Grey Gardens) last film. Iris is the grandmother I wish I had, delightfully eccentric and committed to looking good. This portrait of her life is a great example of fashion outside of the trends and the value of crafting a personal style image. The delicacy of Maysles’ filmmaking suggests not only an amazing human but a committed artist, who has illuminated her life and those around her by injecting it with beauty and a sense of play.

The September Issue - R.J. Cutler

I’m still not sure we are worthy of Anna Wintour. Her impossible ambition and work ethic, matched with her unlearnable sense of style have made her THE tastemaker of the American fashion world. She has wit, she has charm, and most importantly, she has VISION. In The September Issue, we are afforded a rare look at her work behind the scenes in Vogue’s biggest and most important issue of the year.

The True Cost - Andrew Morgan

It’s easier than ever to look good on a budget, with big name stores like Forever 21 and H&M offering to the consumers increasingly cheap style options. But at what cost? The True Cost takes a look at the hidden price tag behind these affordable options, the human and environmental toll of looking good without breaking the bank. While many of us are aware that the clothing we were is often made in sweatshops, actually seeing the conditions that people are living and working in is something else all-together. Be prepared to feel guilty looking through your closet after watching this one.

Unzipped - Douglas Keeve

Maybe the original fashion documentary, Unzipped takes a look at the behind-the-scenes life of designer Issac Mizrahi in the mid-1990s. With a stripped down look and featuring an all-star cast of some of the biggest supermodels in the world, Unzipped is glamorously un-glamorous in its approach. Parsing through the fantasy of making sartorial dreams come to life, Unzipped features a world plagued by stress and mishaps. In many ways, Unzipped has defined and cemented our understanding of the personalities and dramas of the fashion world.
