IX Podcast 15: hrmxny - Yung Boi Makin' Waves

Remember when we covered Kaytranada's Toronto show a few months back? If you caught the opening act, you should be familiar with hrmxny. He's 19 and already signed to Embrace, having spun sets alongside Diplo, SBTRKT, Flosstradamus, and Freddie Gibbs. hrmxny met with IX Daily to shed some insight on his success so far. Let me tell you, when two weirdo's unite, it's a beautiful thing.
The 15th edition of the IX Podcast is now available via iTunes, Soundcloud and Mixcloud. Tracklist after the jump!
IX: Let's talk about the Toronto music scene. What was your first show like?
hrmxny: I played my first show with Gaslamp Killer and Great Dane Harrison. At first, the Embrace promoter sort of brushed me off like, "Yeah, kid. Go set up." - three days later he gave me R. L. Grime. He took me under his wing and now he's my manager.
IX: So why, The Hoxton?
hrmxny: Well, last year my dude Christian Andersen had a gig there with Kaytranada and Sango. It was the first show I'd ever been too, and I was like, "I want to play here one day. I want my first show to be here." Since then, I've played with Kaytranada twice and we're homies.
IX: That's huge. When was the first time you played with him?
hrmxny: The first time was at the Time Fest After Party when I opened for Sango and OBESN. Time Fest was wicked. I was there for Action Bronson. He's really humble and always stoned. Some dude handed him a pastrami sandwich on stage and he stopped performing to eat it. He's like my dad.
IX: So, what's your favorite shows you've played to date?
hrmxny: Playing trap for two hours with R. L. Grime was pretty mentionable. Uhhh, Kaytranada was cool too, he's a really quiet dude. Also, the Mad Decent After-Party with Diplo, Zed's Dead, Grand Theft and Flosstradamus was dope. Walshy Fire was there.
IX: How would you say you've progressed as an artist since then?
hrmxny: I went from a month to preparing, to preparing at the show. In my experience, this has better results because I'm having more fun. The first show I played was my make-or-break moment, but now I don't have to worry as much.
IX: What's up your sleeve these days?
hrmxny: I'm on the road to getting signed with 2+2 Management (Zeds Dead, Thugli, Grand Theft), and I have an E.P. in the works set for release in December. Right now, I want to collaborate with singers. Man, I wish I had a collection of little singing people in my closet, that'd be cool.
IX: Speaking of which, tell us about your musical influences.
hrmxny: My family's diverse so I grew up listening to a range of genres from Frank Sinatra and Charles Bucceli, to Abba, Neil Diamond and Tim McGraw... When I got a bit older I went through a big G-Unit phase. I wanted to be Young Buck but my mom was like, "NO".
IX: Where do you see yourself going?
hrmxny: I want to get to a point where I can help the people around me. To be at a level of fame where I have control over people in a good way.
IX: Can you tell us something embarrassing about yourself?
hrmxny: My number one fear is whales. Don't show me a picture of a whale, they're way too big. I have nightmares of me swimming in the ocean - I turn around and there's a whale. Get away from me. Whales are not a thing.
IX: Any final words for all the weirdo's out there?
hrmxny: My brain works in a weird way... I like wearing a towel on my head. I think if people are paying to watch you preform, why wouldn't you have fun? I'm all over the place. You definitely need to interact with your fans. Shout out to all the pear.
