IX: Who is GIMMEMAR ?

Pronounced: [Gih-mee-mahr] mar = the first 3 letters of my name, Martina.

Gimmemar is a young woman who is rarely satisfied, always daydreaming and looking to improve life.

It represents this microwave culture of youth who desire to conquer dreams so quickly but don’t quite understand the time and effort it takes to produce longevity and quality. Gimme gimme never gets, unless you get up and (as Britney once said) work for it, bitch.

IX: When did you start spinning/producing music?

After being a young party fan girl behind the DJ booth, I took a few DJ lessons in 2009 at this place called School of Remix in Vancouver. I was hooked and saved up for turntables the following year. It took me a while to have the confidence to even call myself a DJ. I would say “oh I’m just a wannabe DJ or a bedroom boomer”.

As for writing music - I started writing poetry as a kid and it slowly grew into humming melodies/raps.

IX: Did you have any musical background before getting into the DJ scene?

I was in  choir and jazz choir all throughout high school. I took some piano lessons as a kid and  voice lessons throughout my teen years. I guess I was always making mixtape cds for myself, family and friends - curating music was always fun for me and I was always on the hunt for new music.

IX: What artists have had an influence on what you do?

I can name a few artists that influenced my musical taste but specifically for DJ’ing…

I would say Erykah Badu was a first. When I saw her in the “love of my life” music video - she was singing, rapping, DJ’ing and bboying. I was like ok, I want to express myself in a variety of forms just like that.

The Vancouver club scene played a big role. The Freshest Kids, Flipout, Jay Swing, Johnny Jover, DJ Ana, Marlon J English - to name a few were all DJ’s who I went out to dance for and secretly take notes from. The local bookings also brought in some influential legends like Jazzy Jeff, Premiere, Grandmaster Flash, Axwell, Alan Braxe, Dirty South, Steve Angello etc… all blew me away.

When I was in school for fashion, the whole “fashion it girl DJ” became a thing and I was thrilled at the idea of mixing two of my passions. Harley Viera Newton, Leigh Lezark, Mia Moretti, Chelseah Leyland, Hannah Bronfman are a few women who’s lifestyle I would frequently admire.

IX: What is one of your most memorable moments in your career up to now?

I’m just grateful to have frequent bookings within the fashion retail world - because that was always a goal of mine.

Also, opening for Nadus and Araab Muzik at Velvet Underground during All Star Weekend was pretty cool because their music isn’t exactly part of my daily listens but I killed my 1 hour set.

IX: What is the big plan for the next year?

My main focus is to finish off my debut EP. I sing and rap, and that’s been in development for much too long - hoping to have something finished by the end of this year! I am still DJ’ing as much as possible as it is my fun way of expression and pays the bills of course!
