Strange As It Seems: hrmxny Drops Fire EP And It Will Give You Feels
After we saw hrmxny open for Kaytranada back in 2014, we knew we had to keep our eye on him. The last time we sat down may have been over a year ago, but it's safe to say Yung Harm has continued to make some serious strides. To follow up his last E.P. In Time, hrmxny just dropped his latest and most ambitious project, Strange As It Seems. "I don't just want to be a SoundCloud producer," shares hrmxny over the phone, "I wanna tell a story with my music," and so he does.
The E.P. has been coined "a blend of genres and emotions". From classic film noir samples (Roberta's Call) flowing into moody, sad-boy electronic (Strange As It Seems). These beats mix smoothly into an emotionally charged hip-hop freestyle (One Way) that shares hrmxny's testament to making his visions a reality. The interlude sample used in "Where's It Coming From" is significant, not only on a personal level but because the words resonate with Yung Harm's perspective on creating music as a whole. Every beat, every synth pattern, and every sample comes together to share his story.
Strange As It Seems is very real to me. I'm trying to stray from genre. I want people to take it in. It's a blend of so many different styles that tells the story of my life and influences. It's how I think in one project. - hrmxny
Things get moody, yo. But hrmxny succeeds at lifting you back up with his tracks Play No Games and Take You Higher, coming at you with groovy, future house basslines and upbeat melodies. The piece finishes off with Nightlife, an emotional track that stems from the love of his fam and the city, and what it's like trying to find that balance we all seek. Each beat will hit your ear in a certain way, building off a foundation of themes, emotion, and experiences that have cultivated Yung Harm's signature style.
The kind of music that I like is the kind where... there's something unique about him or her. That's why they put this record on. Not because it sounded like this one, or it fit comfortably between commercials. But, because there's really something worth while here. - "Where's It Coming From (Interlude)"
Strange As It Seems is pure heart, and in it's entirety, we're super stoked on this one. Download the E.P. for free on Soundcloud. Tell all your friends.
