Fans Rejoice! Sailor Moon Crystal Begins In July

As a child, I remembered sitting by my bedside every night, praying that one day I'd meet a talking cat that would grant me the ability to transform into a magical warrior of justice. Of course, by that statement alone, we could tell where I got that crazy idea from--I bet every fan of 90s anime favourite Sailor Moon made the same wish. Even till this day, I dream of waking the next morning as a Sailor Scout.

Sailor Moon

BRIGHT BEGINNINGS

For those unaware or who didn't have a childhood as awesome as mine (sorry!) the Sailor Moon series (both anime and manga) tells the story of 14-year old middle-schooler named Usagi Tsukino (which literally translates to "Moon Bunny"). After a chance encounter with Luna, a mysterious-looking cat, Usagi learns of her true self, a descendant of the Moon Kingdom from long ago. At this point, she is also tasked with the mission to protect the earth and eventually revive the kingdom along other magical girls like her.

ENTER SAILOR MOON CRYSTAL

There has been some talk as early as last summer on a reboot of Naoko Takeuchi's beloved creation. With the majority of old fans grown up, they could relieve the nostalgia of Sailor Moon through a polished version of the series: Sailor Moon Crystal

And what exactly would this bring to the table?

Sailor Moon Crystal

According to many fan sites such as Sailor Moon: The MooniverseCrystal is set to be a more mature rendition of the series, staying as close to the manga storyline as possible. For those who haven't read the latter recently, I highly suggest you do. The 90s anime and the manga are NOT THE SAME AT ALL!!! Expect more tears!

We can already compare the new look with the previous ones in the image below. I'll admit, I've been having a hard time adjusting. I still prefer the original manga artwork. The characters in Crystal are going for a much slimmer, brighter look. Hopefully I'll accept it in due time.

SAILOR MOON OVERDOSE

So when and where can we watch Sailor Moon Crystal? Fans across the world have been hyped with the release of brand new limited edition merchandise, and have been bombarded with countless press releases keeping them up to date with the construction of the new series. Earlier this month, sites such as Viz.com and Hulu have been broadcasting all original 200 uncut episodes of Sailor Moon, and these same episodes will be available shortly on DVD and Blu-Ray. As for Sailor Moon Crystal, the very first episode will be available sooner than you think.

Saturday, July 5, 2014.

Yes, that's right. In less than a week, Crystal will be simulcasted worldwide via VizHuluCrunchyrollNicoNico, and more. Crunchyroll will be broadcasting a new episode every 2 weeks at 3AM PST. Who else is STOKED?

Usagi is stoked

If you haven't yet, mark your calendar! And in the meantime, reminisce on old times with the classic Sailor Moon theme song, "Moonlight Denetsu".
